Welcome to the Human Mobility Research Centre
Human Mobility Research Centre - Innovative Research

At HMRC our focus is helping people live fuller, more mobile lives by pioneering the development of innovative and effective treatment strategies for bone and joint disorders caused by arthritis, osteoporosis, injury, and related problems.

The Centre is a partnership between Queen’s University and Kingston General Hospital (KGH) and serves as a point of collaboration between the disciplines of medicine, engineering, health sciences, and information technology.

HMRC provides shared research space and services for clinicians, orthopaedic surgeons, university faculty, students, and industry. We are located in KGH and have specialized labs for connective tissue, bio-simulation, tissue processing, prosthesis design, software development, and gait analysis, as well as one of the world’s first computer-enhanced surgical suites.

New initiatives:

Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE)

HMRC Human Motion Performance Laboratory

HMRCThe Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program is an initiative of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC). The CREATE program was launched in 2009 and the Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC) at Queen's University was one of its first twenty grant recipients. HMRC HMRC Human Motion Performance Laboratory

A new, state-of-the-art, world class facility for the measurement of the biomechanics of human movement during activities of daily living is being designed for the Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC). The plan is for a flexible space that can be used to measure walking patterns, as well as high demand activities (i.e. occupational or recreational). The new facility will be located in the Regional Ambulatory Care facility at Hotel Dieu Hospital. This is the ideal location due to its proximity to the orthopaedic clinics. The laboratory will foster interdisciplinary collaborations between engineering, orthopaedics, and rehabilitation that are essential to the focus and innovation of research and translating the new knowledge into clinically important applications. There is an increasing body of literature that supports the rationale for the development of non-invasive treatment for knee osteoarthritis, and there are few groups in the world that are working to that end. The proposed infrastructure would provide what is needed for Queen's to become a world leader in this new area of research in health care.
