Lasers in Manufacturing Applications

Course Description

Course presents an overview of lasers as they relate to selected manufacturing applications.  Topics covered include general principles of laser operation, description of laser types used in manufacturing, components of laser-based processing systems and their motion programming and control.  Students carry out a survey-based project chosen by the student in consultation with the instructor.  The project examines the current state-of-the-art in research and industrial application of a chosen laser-based manufacturing method.  Results are presented in the form of a report submitted at the end of the course as well as a seminar given to the class.
