Dear Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty, Students and Staff:

It seems just like yesterday when I began my role as Head in the Department, and yet hard to believe the end has come. As I look forward to an exciting appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (effective July 1), I wish to extend my sincere, personal thanks to everyone in the MME community who has contributed to the success of this department and inspired and challenged me along the way. We are truly blessed to have such talented students, dedicated staff, and faculty who strive for excellence in teaching, research and service to this department. Most importantly, we have a strong sense of community and support that helps us all overcome the particular challenges we all face, and brings some fun to working here.

This is an exciting time of growth and renewal for the department as we look to several new hires coming into our faculty group, renovations that will rejuvenate the department, and a new presence on campus in the Queen's Innovation and Wellness Centre. There is much on the horizon for our department, and I look forward to the great collaborations that will occur in the next few years. As Steven Johnson said, “The trick to having good ideas is not to sit around in glorious isolation and try to think big thoughts. The trick is to get more parts on the table.”

As I step down from my position as Head I know the Department will be in good hands with Chris Mechefske as Acting Head and Tim Bryant as Acting Associate Head.

And as we head into summer, I hope everyone gets a chance to recharge and reflect on the accomplishments they have achieved.

In closing, this is a note of thanks to everyone for contributing to the outstanding reputation of #QueensMech – not a goodbye. I look forward to keeping in touch.

Kevin Deluzio
Professor and (Outgoing) Head
