Disability and Privacy Issues

Disability Issues

Students with diverse learning styles and needs are welcome in my courses. In particular, if you have a disability or health consideration that may require accommodations, please feel free to approach me and/or the Accessibility Services Office as soon as possible. The Accessibility Services staff are available by appointment to assess specific needs, provide referrals and arrange appropriate accommodations. The sooner you let them and me know your needs, the quicker we can assist you in achieving your learning goals in my courses.

Some students with approved accommodations may have note-takers, or be permitted to make audio recordings of lectures. These notes and recordings are for personal use only and may not be shared with other students or distributed in any way without express permission from me.

Privacy Issues

In courses where students are organized into groups, projects assigned, presentations made, etc., it is almost inevitable that student names will be posted in lists and associated with the course, groups, projects, and presentation times. If this creates undue problems for you, please contact me.

Personal information about individual students will remain confidential, however some positive information in the public domain may be reported, such as the names of winners of internal or external competitions. Likewise, we have traditionally taken photographs or videos of public and semi-public events and used them to promote courses, the department, and the university. These include such things as design project presentations, project prototype testing, and lab activities taking place in public view. We also use positive examples of student posters, presentations, etc. to promote our program. Please contact me if you wish to keep any of this material confidential.

Some student projects (including all industry sponsored MECH 460 projects) receive funding from Ontario Centres of Excellence and their mandate includes tracking the success of those projects through contact with the students. If you choose an OCE supported project we will release your name and Queen's email address to OCE on their undertaking that "The Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) is required to collect data associated with their Connections program. Data collected will be for internal OCE use only. Any data published publicly will be in aggregate form, no individual responses will be released. Your college/university email address will be released to OCE strictly for this purpose."

Please be advised that images and/or video and audio recordings may be taken at course events and may be used, for promotional purposes or otherwise, by the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and Queen's University. If you do not wish your photograph to be used, please contact me.
