Admission and Application

Students have two options to complete their MEng degree:

1) Successfully take (and pass) 7 courses (3.0 units each) plus 1 project course, MECH 898,

OR,

2) Successfully take (and pass) 8 courses (3.0 units each)

Note: The MECH 898 project course is worth 3.0 units in our department.

The MEng requires a total of eight courses. At least four of them must be MECH courses. No more than two of them may be 400 series courses (fourth-year undergraduate level). See the Graduate Calendar for regulatory details. Some courses are linked to Projects. These timelines define the usual sequence for selecting and registering for projects. Selected Topics Courses at the 800 level (MECH 840, 842, 843, 844) allow you to customize your learning in a specialized area. APSC 801 is mandatory. It is non-credit and is in addition to the 8 courses you will take for the degree.

Typical admission for this program takes place in September only. The duration is 1 year or three (3) semesters. Students can stay on to take additional terms, with permission of the Graduate School, if they require extra time to complete the eight (8) courses needed for the program. Students often take 2-3 courses in the fall term, 3-4 courses during winter term, and their final course(s) during the summer term. Students need 8 successfully completed courses (70% or higher) for the program requirements.

Graduate students must enrol, or register in each semester, maintaining their registration. Whether they are taking no courses or 1 - 4, the tuition fees are the same. This is a regulation of the School of Graduate Studies. No matter how many semesters a student takes to complete the program, the MEng program is considered a one-year program.

Students in this program do not work under the supervision of a professor but can consult with the MEng Coordinator as needed.

Students in the MEng program can use the Career Services office on campus to learn more about CV writing, cover letters and interviewing skills, and the option of one-on-one counselling sessions. MEng students often apply for internship and/or employment opportunities and attend career fairs.

APSC-801 Master of Engineering Foundations
An introduction to the Master of Engineering (MEng) graduate studies program at Queen’s University. The course provides students with essential administrative information, an introduction to information literacy within Smith Engineering at Queen's, and an overview of the various support services on campus. Additionally, the course contains several modules on professional and career skills. This non-credit course is comprised of a number of individual modules, and its completion is a requirement to graduate from the MEng program. Graded on a Pass/Fail basis.
Prerequisites: Enrolment in the MEng program. Exclusions: Students not enrolled in the MEng program.

A bachelor’s degree in Applied Science or Engineering with a B- (70-72.9% or GPA 2.7)

English Proficiency Requirements

If required, a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or TOEFL iBT minimum scores of: writing (24/30); speaking (22/30); reading (22/30); listening (20/30), for a total of 88/120. OR IELTS minimum score of 7.0

Applicants are responsible for monitoring their application process via the School of Graduate Studies portal . The department does not send updates on application status. Only successful applicants will be contacted.

The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) does not use Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to assess applications. We ask that you do not submit GREs with your application. Applicants are asked to submit two references/referees. This is to be done after the application fee is paid. At this point, an email will be sent to your references, asking them to respond.

Students can upload their transcript electronically to the Graduate School's website. If the MME department determines we are willing to admit you, you will be asked to mail or courier an official, original transcript to the Queen's School of Graduate Studies at:

You do not require a supervisor to apply for and be admitted to the MEng program.

Application Deadline: There is no hard deadline; however, we encourage you to apply before March 1 to improve your odds of qualifying for internal awards.

Notification of Acceptance: End of March to July for September admissions.

Funding

MEng students in a coursework program do not receive financial support, although some MEng students may be hired as Teaching Assistants (TAs). With 60 hours of work maximum, one TA position can be worth an estimated $2,300. TA positions are advertised (on the MME website and by email) in August for a September start and mid-December for a January start. A TA position is not guaranteed.
