• Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering
  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering with Professional Internship
  • Option in General / Materials / Biomechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineers are needed wherever there are machines or devices – including the human body. Their work covers every stage of design, manufacturing, testing, operation, and research. A remarkable range of industries rely on the skills of mechanical engineers, including automotive, aerospace, energy, environmental, communication, materials and manufacturing, food and chemical processing, medical and biomechanical, and many more.

Our program will prepare you with the professional skills needed to excel in the broad field of mechanical engineering, with the opportunity to specialize in biomechanical or materials engineering.

What you’ll learn

We provide a solid foundation in the basic engineering sciences. You'll learn about:

  • Solid mechanics and dynamics
  • Materials engineering
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Thermodynamics
  • Heat transfer

The program builds on this foundation with courses that are vital in mechanical engineering. These courses include machine design, manufacturing methods, and instrumentation and control.

In your upper-year, you'll choose from a wide variety of technical electives. Electives include computer-aided design, design of biomechanical devices, advanced fluid dynamics, aerospace engineering, robotics, turbomachines, ergonomics and design, mechatronic systems design, advanced materials, and thermal systems design.

Hands-on Learning

Queen’s Mechanical and Materials Engineering leads the way in project-based, team-oriented, hands-on learning. We have a well-equipped machine shop for developing prototypes, complete with CAD (computer-aided design) workstations and CNC (computer numerically controlled) machines. Every student gains hands-on experience in our machine shop practice course, and our upper-year electives offer even more opportunities for active learning. In your final year, you will have the opportunity to complete a design project in our industry-sponsored Capstone course.

There are countless extracurricular design teams for students to test-drive their skills. There are teams for every interest, including teams that design and build small off-road vehicles, rockets, and biomedical devices.
